VELAS 2022.

An exciting collaboration with Cpost International N.V. and Curaçao Sail Foundation to create “the Velas 2022”. A unique new series of stamps dedicated to the Velas Latinoamérica 2022 Regatta festival.

Each ship has its unique story and with this festival their sails complement the architecture of the city of Curaçao wonderfully.

Velas Latinoamérica, the Regatta around South America from Brasil to Mexico via Argentina and Chile, stopped in the port of Curaçao in June 7th till June 12th, 2022 for the second time.

This festival is all about strengthening bonds between the many Navies and nations participating.

Stamp Series

THE STAMPS Description.

This stamp series consists of the ships; Capitán Miranda (Cat.2), 11 Países (289c), ARM Cuauhtémoc (464c), and Cisne Branco (496c).

Capitán Miranda, Ambassador to the seas and the world, was originally built as a survey vessel for the Uruguayan Navy and saw many decades of successful service until she was eventually given a schooner rig and a new purpose as a sail training vessel in 1977.

Also part of the series is the ‘11 Países’ stamp, which was designed to honor the 11 Latin American countries. As can be seen on the map published by the Brazilian Navy, 7 large ships will visit 13 ports in 11 countries. Together they have 976 crew members on board and their sail area reaches 11,270 m2.

Following the ‘11 Países’ stamp, we have the tall ship ARM Cuauhtémoc, which is a sail training vessel used by the Mexican Navy to develop the seamanship skills of their cadets. She also acts as an ambassador for Mexico in every ports she visits, with regular appearances at many international tall ships events across the world.

Last but not least, the Cisne Branco is a sail training tall ship operated by the Brazilian Navy. She was launched in 2000 to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the discovery of Brazil and has since taken part in many major international tall ships events such as L'Armada Rouen (in 2003, 2008 and 2013) and Velas SudAmerica in 2010, representing both the Brazilian Navy and the culture of Brazil on a truly international stage.
